چکیده

Surgical site infections are common following surgical procedures, despite aseptic technique and prophylactic antibiotic use. Although gut commensals believed to limit certain in the intestine, an analogous role for skin has not been described. To identify bacteria with potential protect against infection, we characterized wound microbiome 52 patients who underwent cancer surgery healed without signs or symptoms of infection. Compared intact, non-operated from same patients, observed several species significant differences relative abundance one week after surgery. The most found on intact skin, Cutibacterium acnes, was depleted wounds by 5-fold. Surprisingly, Staphylococcus aureus, a frequent cause postoperative infections, enriched 6.4-fold clinically non-infected wounds, suggesting active suppression this pathogen. Finally, members Corynebacterium genus were dominant organism is making up 37% average microbiome. Future studies focused biological clinical significance may shed light normal healing therapeutic opportunities mitigate infection risk.

Advances in skin grafting and treatment of cutaneous wounds.

The ability of the skin to repair itself after injury is vital to human survival and is disrupted in a spectrum of disorders. The process of cutaneous wound healing is complex, requiring a coordinated response by immune cells, hematopoietic cells, and resident cells of the skin. We review the classic paradigms of wound healing and evaluate how recent discoveries have enriched our understanding ...

Utilizing Free Skin Grafts in the Repair of Surgical Wounds

The use of free grafts to close defects in wounds following surgery has long been utilized in dermatology practice. However, because of the low survival of the grafts, their popularity has dwindled over recent years. The use of techniques such as attaching an “umbilical cord” from the base of the grafts to the underlying deep fascia or cartilage has markedly increased graft survival. In this pa...

Malignant cutaneous wounds.

Very little literature is available about malignant cutaneous fungating wounds, and most of the research has been conducted in England. Although only a small number of patients with cancer develop the traumatic and devastating complication of a malignant cutaneous wound, it can be a very distressing occurrence. These patients usually are in the last few months of their lives, and the presence o...

Municipal Solid Waste Landfills Harbor Distinct Microbiomes

Landfills are the final repository for most of the discarded material from human society and its "built environments." Microorganisms subsequently degrade this discarded material in the landfill, releasing gases (largely CH4 and CO2) and a complex mixture of soluble chemical compounds in leachate. Characterization of "landfill microbiomes" and their comparison across several landfills should al...

Digital Image Analysis for the comparative study of skin erythema after skin closure of surgical wounds

Digital images of clean surgical wounds following suturing were obtained and computer-assisted image analysis was performed. Surgical wounds were sutured by two different kinds of sutures each. A comparative study of the quality of five different suture materials according to the quantity of skin erythema that they caused was carried out. The aim of study was to establish an objective method fo...
